Can’t you just taste it? Juicy Thanksgiving turkey, homemade mashed potatoes with butter dripping off, warm pecan pie, and piping hot wassail. Pick any holiday and I am there with my plate ready to be filled. The spread of food at my grandmother’s house is immeasurable. My eyes can hardly take in the enormous amount of food, and as dinner begins, I take a little of this, a spoonful or two of that, and of course a teeny tiny slice of pie (or two) and soon my plate is spilling over. But it’s okay right? It’s only one holiday and we’re allowed to do that every once in awhile. Right??? At the end of these meals, my stomach is pushing against my pants button, while my soul is starving. Gorging myself, even only occasionally, might be ok by societal terms but it is not pleasing to God when we fill up with stuff rather than him. Just because we can eat it all, doesn’t mean we should. If you are left feeling worse after a huge holiday meal, consider the choices you made and ask God to fill you with his Holy Spirit the next time this temptation comes.
